Batch Editing

Okay first off, you can THANK ME later…

Ya know with a cup of starbucks, a pair of Louboutins, a statement necklace?! πŸ˜‰

I finally figured out HOW to do a video tutorial for my BEST fans and friends in the biz.

I have been wanting to do this and y’all gave me just the push I needed.

SO, THANK YOU!

Batch editing is amazing. It’s a great way to edit your photos in big chunks OR entire sessions!

You can watch these two videos and they will help you understand and learn how to:

1. Create an action perfect for batch editing. (I build one from Michelle Kane’s heARTy set)

2. Batch Edit in PS and have it open – run an action – flatten – save and close! BadaBINGbadaBOOM.

3. Batch Edit in PS using an action without saving and closing – you can leave it open and tweak layers!

4. Plus you’ll get to know my voice, it’s probably deeper than you imagined, AND the real pronunciation of my maiden name. πŸ™‚

So kick back… listen, learn and ENJOY!

(Oh big thing… this is my very first time recording audio and video on my mac AND using Final Cut… so please don’t judge me too much. I made the kids and husband hang out in the backyard today while I recorded this. πŸ™‚ )

(TIP: PLEASE remember with this second video… if you are batch editing and your images are NOT being saved and closed, I would NOT open more than 15 at a time. Photoshop can get bogged down and crash. This is not intended for entire session, but the first video is!
ALSO the action used for this type of batch editing does NOT include save and close in the action, it should NOT have save and close in the action… in order to leave the images open for detailed editing.) I hope this all makes sense!

Is there a way to save the video for quick reference later?

I am not sure, but you can always save this site tab in your favorites or always come back and visit… and search “batch.”

Thanks for the video! I was wondering how do you go back and adjust a layer after you already flattened it? Do you just go to the history and uncheck the flatten. Also how do you go thru your pictures first and make sure the WB is all correct and the way you want it before you do a batch edit? Like for a wedding you have so many different lighting situations..for example some shots might be a little underexposed or over. I want to spend less time in front of my computer and more time with my family. I love this idea! Thanks!

This process is only AFTER Lightroom editing has taken place. I LR edit, then convert to .JPEGS and then batch edit. I only flatten an image after I am satisfied with the layers… but if you were not you would go into your history palette and click the step above flatten and it will bring the layers back.

Haha, try again! We have had problems with these vids being cranky, perhaps it’s vimeo. πŸ™ Next time I am using youtube. I hope you’ve been able to watch it!

Very helpful- awesome, thank you! πŸ˜€ I have had a thought of doing something like this, and just hadn’t tried it yet. Thanks for confirming it works. πŸ˜‰
Quick question- I do not use LR first… I believe that’s what you have your photos in, when you’re selecting which photos you want to run through the batch editing?? How do I select a batch edit, not starting in LR? Does that make sense? TY again!

Everything you see in that video is through Photoshop AND Bridge (which comes with photoshop). If you have PHotoshop, you have bridge as well… under applications “Adobe Bridge CS __.” That is how I view my images that I am opening in PS. πŸ™‚ I hope that helps you?!

Thanks for making these video’s, however they are not very clear…I cannot see what your clicking on in. Is there a way to change that next time you make a video?
I can see the images fine but every thing else seem blur. What is apple x mean

Can you make more video’s…..like how you edit a image from start to finish? How much sharping do you add?

    • ardenprucha says

      September 12, 2012 at 12:44 pm

Apple – is the apple button or command on mac, x is the letter x.
This was my first time to ever record a video or do a video tutorial.
I will surely get better with time.
      *stated in the post πŸ™

Awesome Video!!! So helpful πŸ™‚ I use Photoshop CS5 and I made my own action under default settings because when I go to batch it I can only choose “Default” under “set”. However, when I go to choose my action it isn’t there… am I missing an important step??

    • ardenprucha says

      September 12, 2012 at 6:51 pm

Hmm, that is weird. Why don’t you make a new “SET” and then re-record that action under that new set. Make sure to quit PS before you try running it too many times, so it saves. (You should also SAVE your sets!)

Arden, fabulous job on your first video using so many new audio/video/program tools! I am from Canada and a big fan of your work. I especially appreciate the Q & A’s you’ve been posting between your blog/photo posts. Much thanks for them and congrats on the babe! Cheers, M

Hi Arden! I’ve been following your work for years and when I came across this tutorial 2 years ago, it was a life saver! I created an action following your steps to flatten, save, and close which saved me so much time! I was able to batch edit that final step and my flatten and saved images from photoshop would be saved right back into Lightroom as a Tiff next to my original Raw image. Well, last week I had to update to photoshop cc and now that action no longer works. It keeps over writing the same file over and over. The most frustrating part of this is I don’t know why! The action worked great for 2 years and now won’t work at all! Do you have any thoughts on this? I’ve googled everything. My workflow starts in LR with minor adjustments, then I external edit into photoshop from lightroom. The image used to be saved right back into lightroom next to the original file. πŸ™

    I appreciate you!

Thank you!! It was driving me crazy that I would have to sit and hit “save” for all the images! Now I can make a bunch of my own actions and run them! This will save me so much time for things that don’t need every image touched up (like newborns).

PS- love the colors in the image of your family on the sidebar.
